QMC backs MATES In Construction to build stronger and more resilient workers

QMC Group, an independent contractor specialising in civil infrastructure projects in Greater Sydney, announces today a continued commitment to build stronger and more resilient workers – by supporting suicide prevention organisation, MATES In Construction.

MATES In Construction is a national, not for profit organisation that exists to strengthen the construction industry by preventing (and talking about) suicide. Their aim is not just to reduce suicide and mental stress, but to eliminate it completely from the industry. They give construction workers the tools they need to support their mates on site and work with industry partners to research, evaluate and then educate on the need for suicide prevention initiatives.

According to MATES research, construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work with young workers over two times more likely to take their own lives compared with other young Australians.

Yesterday, QMC brought together our project team, subcontractors, and Mosman Municipal Council to celebrate the success of our newly completed Mosman Square and Village Green Project. We invited MATES in Construction to visit Worksite where our Portfolio Leader Communities, Jackson Harris presented a $5,000 donation on behalf of QMC.

“It is an honour to present the donation on behalf of QMC’s Communities Portfolio. Our fundraising efforts will help MATES further their work into improving mental health for construction workers. We are proud to play a small role in supporting such a great cause.” said Jackson Harris.

It was insightful to listen to Brad Parker from MATES who spoke about the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers and what we can do to support each other and be aware of our own wellbeing.
